Future of "Freemium": Driving Business or Out of Business?
Panel · FutureM · Boston, MA · October 17, 2013
With Alex Gramling (W3 Companies), Dan Schleifer (ChartIQ) · Moderated by Seth Miller (Miller Systems)
Tabrez Syed appeared as Vice President of Products at Spiceworks, a company built on giving its product away — the business model the panel was convened to argue about. Around 100 people attended, per the host’s recap. The session ran 9:30–10:30am at the Hynes Convention Center.
From the conference listing:
From software to journalism, consumers and business leaders expect so much for free. It’s disrupting business models and forcing producers to shift to higher-value/highly-differentiated niches, or switch to other monetization models, such as selling off user data or hocking ads. When the expectation is “free and cheap,” how do you market premium offerings that will sustain a business model?
The full session survives on video, one of the few from those years that does.
